Making better policies for food systems will require reducing evidence gaps

There is broad consensus on the need for bold action to improve performance of food systems. But as recent work by OECD has shown, many important systems issues progress hampered evidence gaps. These concern not just extent, characteristics and drivers policy issues, but also importantly effectiveness different instruments their synergies trade-offs, well how a intervention would affect stakeholders, what citizens’ preferences are. Across these topics, types gaps exist. Evidence incomplete even where exists, it often detailed enough be useful. Inconsistent methodologies may prevent comparison available evidence. In other cases, fragmented across public private actors. At same time, never perfect. A pragmatic way forward focus better can make biggest difference, example through use gap maps. New technologies institutional innovations help.
